The capital city of Indonesia is located on
the island of Java. As in many capital cities, the number of inhabitants
in Jakarta is extremely high. At this moment the city has 22 million inhabitants.
The contrast between the rich and the poor is distressful; the slums are
built right next to the luxury apartment blocks. Often the slums are only
built of recycled wooden pallets, plastic or from cardboard boxes. The Aulia Foundation is concerned about the destiny of the inhabitants of the slum areas and on the streets of Jakarta. They started their activities in the seventies and they now focus on 12 designated slum areas. The social workers of the foundation visit these areas on a daily basis.The accent of their program is to create a good future for the children living in these areas. In order to achieve this the Foundation also focuses on the development of the adults. Giving respect and attention to the poor is an important issue. In the slum areas the living conditions are usually very poor due to the lack of a proper sewage system, electricity, water supply and sanitary facilities. People live in small, dark houses, quite often with several families in one room. To construct the houses people normally use wood, plastic but also asbestos that they find on the streets. Quite frequently due to heavy rainfall complete slum areas are flooded for days or sometimes even weeks. In some case these areas are completely washed away due to floods. Many inhabitants of the slum areas don't have a steady job or income. Occasionally they earn a small amount of money through recycling plastic, scrap metal, cardboard etc. Besides this children have to go out on the streets to beg or earn money through prostitution.
